Sports Today
Sports play a huge role in today's society whether we are playing them or watching them. Sports also allow for jobs whether you are a professional athlete, a reporter, a coach, and so on. Americans use sports as a get away from everyday life just like the colonists used them to escape the hardships of war. However, over the years sports have changed drastically.
You can no longer participate in cockfighting legally as it is seen as animal cruelty. Also, the purpose of football is not to beat each other up, but rather to score touchdowns. As Americans we look to sports in times of need as we have seen in the past year with Sandy Hook shootings and the Boston Marathon bombing. The people of Boston looked their athletes for help and they did just that they allowed them to believe in something good again.
We also still play sports during holidays and celebrations just like they did in the colonies. On Thanksgiving many people gather around the television and watch football. On New Years people gather around the television to watch the Winter Classic which a hockey game that is played outdoors. Families also go outside and play these sports during the holidays for bonding moments.
Today, the popular sports may not be cockfighting, horseracing, quoits, or cricket, but rather football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. But the meaning is still the same. People still gather around to watch people participate in these sports. We cheer for our teams when the win and when they lose because for a few hours watching the big game allows us to escape from our everyday lives.
